Shayani Ekadashi is a very powerful day in Hindusim which could also be identified with other names similar to – Devshayani Ekadashi, Devpodhi Ekadashi, Maha-ekadashi, Prathama-ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi and so on.
Ekadashi refers back to the 11th lunar day. Shayani Ekadashi falls at the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) of the intense fortnight (Shukla paksha) of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June – July). Hence, the Shayani Ekadashi is often referred to as Ashadhi Ekadashi or Ashadhi. On these days, devotees worship Lord Vishnu. The day holds particular importance to Vaishnavas.

It’s mentioned that on Devshayani Ekadashi day, the Lord Vishnu is going to sleep for 4 months. After his deep sleep, the Lord Vishnu wakes up on Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi. The length in between Devshayani Ekadashi and Dev Uthani Ekadashi is referred to as Chaturmas. Hence, Devshayani Ekadashi marks the start of Chaturmas.
Devotees practice rapid on Shayani Ekadashi and abstain from all grains, beans, cereals, sure greens like onions and likely spices.
On these days, an enormous spiritual procession referred to as ‘Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi Waari Yatra’ culminates at Pandharpur situated in Solapur district in Maharashtra. In Pandharpur, Lord Vishnu is worshiped as deity Vitthal.
